Increasing your Twitter Followers

by Nelly Berova, Director of Art Division Ltd

With over 175 million registered users in 2010, Twitter has undoubtedly changed the social networking landscape. Not only this, but it has had a massive impact on the way we, as businesses, interact with not only our current clients, but also prospective ones.

Twitter logo and birdIt is essential to consider your Twitter followers not just as a list of names - but a high value marketing database - all of your followers have, by choosing to follow you, opted in to receive updates, news and are interested in what you have to say.

Of course, you can leave your Twitter followers to grow organically - which, depending the rest of your marketing strategy - can certainly work. But to speed up this process, here are a few tips...

1. Talk about your Twitter Stream Everywhere!
Obviously, the way you interact on different networks will be different - from Facebook to your blog to your YouTube channel. But don't let this stop you encouraging your Facebook fans to follow you on Twitter, or vice versa.

2. Get interested in other people
A lot of Twitter users will automatically follow their followers - so choose a handful of people in the same field as you. Get involved, start conversations and create relationships - just like in the real world, engagement and interaction is what it's all about.

3. Tweet Frequently
After all, people follow you as they're interested in what you have to say. If you're not saying anything, they will "unfollow" you. It's as simple as that.
Consider also the peak times for tweeting - if all of your market is active at lunchtime each day, this is when you too should be tweeting.

4. Get the statistics
By using bit.ly to shorten your links, not only does it make the link shorter, but also gives you a great insight into the traffic you're generating. You can then use these (free) click-through statistics to monitor the interest and demand for different types of content.

5. Target Key Opinion Leaders in your Field
Use the "@ing" function to target key figures within your field, this allows you to also expose your brand to their followers - they might even RT (re-tweet) your comment.

6. Search for Yourself
Search for yourself and your company in the search box - and get involved in the conversation! Don't miss out on the great CRM opportunities that Twitter offers, and be sure to monitor your online reputation.
