SEO: Times have changed.

By Nelly Berova, director of Art Division

2005- Undoubtedly a great year. The UK was awarded the (2012) Summer Olympics, and the economy was going from strength to strength. Keywords were a vital part of Google's assessment of your website, and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) businesses began to promise the impossible (and haven't stopped since!).

In 2010, things have changed. Not only has Social Media managed to influence the music charts, the aim is now nothing less than the next national government (with Facebook groups such as "We got Rage Against the Machine to #1, we can get the Lib Dems into office!").

So 5 years on and a lot has changed. SEO included. But it doesn't have to be complicated. For example, HTML Page Titles are pretty simple (after you've read our guide below, of course!), and are a really important part of your webpage in terms of SEO.

The HTML Page Title

What is it? These are the words displayed in the top left-hand corner of your web-browser. Normally they give you an idea about what the page is about. In windows explorer, they're in a white font, with the blue background. Have a look at the picture below.

Why optimise your page title?

The page title is important to on-page SEO - remaining one of the most important factors used by search engines to calculate the relevance of your page, and to establish a ranking.

So, how can I optimise title tags?

Just follow these straight-forward tips:
Make sure the most important keywords are at the start of the title- after the first word, they should decrease in importance

  • Choose your words carefully! Title tags should be kept to 70 characters
  • Make sure the punctuation, grammar and capital letters are consistent on all title tags
  • Want fast results? Just add geographic locations to your title tag. For example, the city in which you're based
  • Go for quality, not quantity. Don't fill your title with every keyword you can think of! Each page of optimised content should be specific to the page

Optimising your website is a win-win activity. Not only will you see sales-leads and traffic increasing, but you could also make your website the talk of the next 5 years!
